Home for the Holidays

Smiling faces are an even more common sight than ususal these days at The Animal Welfare Society as the long term canine guests from the Buxton puppy mill seizure are being adopted into new loving homes. Prospective adopters have been following their story closely since August 21st when they were first seized from the breeding facility in Buxton and have been anxiously awaiting their arrival. Although, it is especially nice to know that some of these pups and dogs are home for the holidays, both AWS and The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland will be taking their time to ensure each find the home that best suits its needs just as it does with any of its residents. Puppy mill dogs sometimes pose more of a challenge, however, in that they may come with behavioral issues particular to dogs with this background.

Many wonder if the attention these animals are getting detracts from that for the shelters' general population of dogs, cats and small animals. Nothing could be farther from the truth as the stir surrounding the case has shone a spotlight on both shelters, increasing traffic and ultimately increasing exposure for all of the animals.

People who are interested in adopting are encouraged to keep checking our website as these dogs and pups will be posted when ready for adoption. Both shelters are still in need of monetary donations.
