The Portland facility filled with over 100 dogs and pups was bustling with staff and volunteers over the Thanksgiving holiday to ensure the guests received the TLC they need regardless of what day it is. Both AWS and ARL are grateful for the support they've received throughout this long and arduous journey whether it be through physical labor as a hands-on volunteer, through donations or simply a kind word of encouragement. The commitment and dedication witnessed during the last 95 days is truly remarkable and the shelters are depending on this great spirit to carry them through to complete their mission.
Since the State of Maine's Animal Welfare Program was awarded custody of approximately 300 dogs and pups as a result of the seizure that took place over 3 months ago, lead agencies The Animal Welfare Society and The Animal Refuge League have been working together to make sure the next phase of this journey plays out according to plan and that the animals never again have to endure the dismal experience that preceded this undertaking. And so both are concentrating on getting every last one of these innocents spayed and neutered and ready for adoption. The goal is to place each animal into a home that suits his or her needs and at the same time fulfill the adopter's expectations.
In the past couple of weeks, volunteers have been deployed from CMDART and UAN's EARS , two organizations that are trained specifically to respond to animal emergencies. People who are interested in adopting are encouraged to keep checking our website as these dogs and pups will be posted when ready for adoption.
