Hope Emerges out of Desperate Situation /Hill's Major Donor

The atmosphere is thick with anticipation these days as workers prepare for the imminent migration of seized puppy mill dogs from Buxton to a new Portland based facility. Although the court has given the defendants 21 days to appeal its decision to overturn custody of the animals to the state, HSUS will oversee the move utilizing staff from the Animal Welfare Society and The Animal Refuge League as well as from the American Humane Association. AWS and ARL will be co-managing the new shelter and providing care for the refugees indefinitely. Fortunately, last month Hill's made a huge difference by donating close to 4000 pounds of food to the state to help provide for these animals for as long as it takes. All involved applaud the company's generosity in this time of crisis. Volunteer coordinators work with management on establishing staffing needs for the new operation. Although the date for the actual relocation is yet to be determined, based on the facilityÕs readiness for occupation and operation, Executive Director, Steve Jacobsen points out that Òevery day weÕre moving a step forward to the move.Ó Anticipation is thick as well in the hearts of countless people whoÕve contacted both shelters in hopes of adopting these animals in the event that they do indeed become available.
