Day 24 – Over three weeks since the Buxton puppy mill seizure, the Department of Animal Welfare will soon be moving the canine refugees into a new building where they can be provided with a higher level of care. With the courtŐs decision pending, there is still no word on whether any of the dogs will be in need of foster care, but itŐs important that we have people standing by in case the need presents itself.

On August 21st at the request of the State of MaineŐs Department of Animal Welfare, The Animal Welfare Society in West Kennebunk along with The Animal Refuge League in Westbrook were called upon to provide care for over 250 dogs and puppies seized from a Buxton puppy mill. Neglected, disheveled, disengaged and some with more serious medical issues like sarcoptic mange and giardia, this large lot left all agencies involved with their work cut out for them and their resources tapped. Since that day, several veterinarians have generously donated their services to assess, diagnose and provide follow-up exams for the patients. Yesterday, the Maine Federation of Humane Societies met to view the situation and offer assistance. AWS and ARL are still in need of monetary donations, canned dog and puppy food and cleaning supplies like bleach and paper.
