Adopt Cats

Adoption: Cats

If you are interested in adopting a cat, simply fill out and print an application, submit an application online, or stop by the shelter to complete the process. The adoption fee includes a health evaluation with a local, participating veterinarian, spaying or neutering, the first series of vaccinations, leukemia testing, internal and external parasite control, a cat carrier, and a collar with ID tag. In light of pet overpopulation problems in Maine, the AWS makes sure that all of our cats and kittens are spayed or neutered before going into their new home.

It's Kitten Season! Take home a mother and one (or more) of her kittens and we will waive her Adoption Fee. In 2008 AWS cared for more than 1,000 kittens.

Can't adopt right now? Please consider a tax-deductible donation to AWS to help us continue doing great things for homeless animals.

How we help our Long-Term Residents!

The primary function of the Animal Welfare Society is to provide shelter and care for homeless animals, while trying to adopt them out into loving, permanent homes. In light of this role, we recognize that some animals will have longer stays at the shelter than others, and that some animals have very little chance of being adopted due to behavioral and/or medical conditions. In order to give due consideration to the animals who have had a longer stay here at the AWS, we have formed the Long Term Resident or LTR Program.

A cat enters the LTR program after being at the shelter for 3 months. This program enables the staff here at the shelter to keep track of and give special consideration to the animals who have been here for an extended period of time. These activities are done in no particular order and are all performed in hopes of increasing the adoptability of the animals and to reduce the chance of stress related behavioral problems. Some activities will be done for all of the residents, while others are on a case-by-case basis.

Adoption fees:

Kittens less than 6 months old are $99.00 or two for $160.00

Cats 6 months to 8 years old are $79.00 each or two for $140.00

Cats 8 years and up are $59.00 or two for $80.00

The Animal Welfare Society Community Cat Rooms are designed to let adoptable cats interact with each other and the public.
